STATEMENT: Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey Reacts to Gov’s New Mask Order

Lansing, Mich. — Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) today released the following statement on the Governor’s new mask order, set to go into effect tomorrow morning:

“I am pleased that CDC guidelines have gotten in alignment with the current science, and that, at last, Michigan has done the same. Even The New York Times reported that CDC guidance lagged behind with what scientific study demonstrated and an update was long overdue. However, today’s guidance from Gov. Whitmer — while heralded by her office as a victory — begs more questions than it answers about her recent actions to make emergency workplace rules permanent or the science behind her ‘Vacc to Normal’ plan. We haven’t seen any detail about this new order beyond Gov. Whitmer’s feel-good statement, but I hope she will opt to trust people rather than issue a confusing enforcement mandate on law enforcement, business owners, or others to pry into citizens’ private medical decisions.”
