Shirkey announces senate republican caucus leadership

LANSING—Senate Majority Leader-elect Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, today announced he has been elected by his fellow caucus members to serve as the Michigan senate majority leader.

“It is truly an honor to be selected by my peers to lead the senate republican caucus and the Michigan Senate.  We spent many months communicating with voters about the importance of electing legislators who are focused on continuing Michigan’s recovery. The result is what you see here today, 22 men and women eager to lead.  Together, we will build upon the established senate republican agenda of commonsense legislation that creates a better Michigan,” said Shirkey.

“Of course we are disappointed that not all of our fellow candidates were able to make it across the finish line.  We could not be more proud of their hard work and determination to be voices for their communities,” said Shirkey.

“Many of the members of the incoming caucus have served in the legislature and contributed to the policies and legislation that have helped make Michigan more competitive over the past several years.  These men and women bring with them years of experience in the public and private sectors, experience that is a tremendous asset to our fellow citizens,” said Shirkey.

“We look forward to working with our counterparts in the House and to building a relationship with the new governor,” said Shirkey.

Senate Majority Leader-elect Shirkey, R-Clarklake, and the senate republican caucus leadership team will assume their roles in January of 2019.

Senate Majority Leader-elect Shirkey, R-Clarklake, was recently reelected to a second term in the Michigan Senate representing the citizens of Branch, Hillsdale and Jackson counties in the 16th Senate District.  Shirkey previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives.  He currently serves as chair of the Senate Health Policy and Michigan Competitiveness committees of the Michigan Senate.

Senate Majority Leader-elect Shirkey and his wife, Sue, have been married for over 40 years.  They have three children and a dozen grandchildren.

“I am especially fortunate to be surrounded by 21 leaders, ready and eager to improve the lives of their constituents.  Together, we will be a strong team for Michigan,” said Shirkey.
