LANSING—Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, today announced an office restructuring.
New hire Connor Spalding will join with Darin Ackerman to form the senate majority leader’s legislative team.
“We are taking advantage of an opportunity to maximize the strengths of our staff and provide better service to the senate, stakeholders, and constituents,” said Shirkey.
“Connor was on staff in our office during my first term in the senate and we are thrilled to have him back as part of our new legislative team. He cut his teeth in the majority leader’s office and has since developed his skill set and his resume. We are certain that Connor will hit the ground running,” said Shirkey.
“Darin is an indispensable member of our senior staff. He will join forces with Connor to improve our legislative operation and deliver better service across the board. We are eager to get this new operation up and running,” said Shirkey.
Spalding will leave his position as Vice President of Government Affairs at the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association later this month to join the majority leader’s office. Spalding will serve as Director of Legislative Strategy. In addition to his previous work with Shirkey, Spalding was on staff in the majority leader’s office under former Senator Randy Richardville and former Senator Arlan Meekhof.
Spalding is a graduate of Michigan State University. He lives in Okemos with his wife, Kim.
Ackerman has been on staff in the majority leader’s office since the start of the term. He will add to his current responsibilities and serve as Senior Advisor and Legislative Director. Ackerman previously served as Director of Legislative Affairs in the administration of former Governor Rick Snyder. Ackerman was a long-time legislative staffer prior to his tenure in the executive branch of state government.
Ackerman is a graduate of Calvin University. He and his wife, Kara, live in Mason with their young son.
