Shirkey and gym owner urge governor to open gyms

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey on Thursday spoke with Brett Boyd, the owner of Anytime Fitness in Hillsdale, about his gym being closed for over five months due to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive orders.

“It is more important now than ever for us to maintain our health and wellness, but folks are being forced to stay away from their gyms and fitness centers,” said Shirkey, R-Clarklake. “Brett and others have demonstrated that gyms can safely reopen. The governor needs to rescind her order keeping them closed.”

Boyd agreed.

“We could have done this safely four months ago,” Boyd said. “Give us the protocols and let us open!”

Several business groups sent a letter to Whitmer Thursday urging her to allow the remaining businesses still closed in much of the state, including gyms, to reopen.

Shirkey said Thursday’s video will be the first of multiple videos in which he will interview business owners whose businesses, employees and customers have been harmed unnecessarily by the governor’s executive orders.
