LANSING, Mich. — Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, paid tribute in the Senate on Thursday to those who gave their lives defending our country.
The Michigan Senate’s 25th Annual Memorial Day Service honored service members who fought with bravery to defend America’s freedom.
Instead of a guest this year, Shirkey honored last year’s guest, Army Master Sgt. Julius Gimskey.
Born on April 23, 1918, Gimskey survived the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. Gimskey died last week at the age of 101. In remembrance, Shirkey’s guest chair was covered in white with a red rose, an American flag flown over the Michigan Capitol, and a framed photo of Gimskey placed in tribute to him.
